While We're Assigning Blame...

Let's Blame the Lack of Civics Education in America

From everything I've read and observed, the fact is that much of the failure to respond appropriately to Hurricane Katrina comes from the failure of Local and State officials to understand their rights and obligations when it comes to invoking disaster situations. Failing to understand what they needed to do to invoke federal, and other aid. And I understand that. While trying to keep unemployment down, deal with billions of dollars in tax revenue, millage rates, and dog catching ordanances, its easy to not pay attention to seemingly silly laws from the early 18th-19th century. But its those laws that determine how our country is organized, and the rights and powers of each level of government.

My fear is that federalism will take the blame. They'll treat law and tradition as uncaring bureaucracy. But its not the same thing. The fact that the Posse Comitatius Act prevents the military from domestic law and order is not the same thing as NOT being able or willing to respond.

They cry will go out to change these hundred plus year old laws, that have kept our country from military dictatorship, and police state, which have kept the power in the hands of local governments. That's a mistake and must be prevented.

The solution is not to change the rules, it is to teach people what they are, and how they apply, and how to utilize them.

I've got $20 that says you can't find 10 kids from the local high school who can tell me what the Posse Comitatus Act even is.

(for the record, In high school I would have been able to tell you, without looking it up.)

In times of disaster, its easy to want to by-pass the rules. Its easy to say "the law doesn't matter compared to human life." But the fact is that it does. Because the world is full of people with Reichstags to burn.

Gas and Circuses

Shut up about gasoline.

Just... Shut your yap.

I am sick and tired about people whining and moaning about the price of gas, like its in the bill of rights

XI. The right to not pay more than a buck o' five for gas, shall not be infringed.

And if you aren't bitching about the price of gas, you're bitching about the supply.

I went out the other day, looking for a quick gas story for the news. I've done one, but when the owner of the company sends a memo to the News Department (read: Me) about gas stories, you should probably at least stop in. Plus i bought a liter of dr.Pepper, so it was win win anyway.

And I ask the clerk, "what are you charging for gas?"

"2.64" (pretty low for around here right now. 2.99-3.02 seems about average)

I listen to what she tells me, than I look at the pump. It's covered in plastic bags.

"Do you actually have any gas?" I ask.

"Nope."

Even at 2.99 a gallon next door, they were out of gas in some varieties.

They are out of gas because their price is too low. Given their supply and the demand, the price needs to be higher. High enough to convince others not to hoard, or top off their tank. And it clearly wasn't, which is why there were shortages this week.

But the fact is gasoline for Americans is like bread for the romans. So long as the elites keep the price down, the regular folks are content to dither their lives away with stupidity like "Ryan Seacrest." Give the plebians enough Chevron with Techron, and some mind-numbing reality shows, and carry on smartly.

Gas... and Circuses.

If you'd let the price get higher, high enough that would actually equal the demand for gas (somewhere above the junkie's demand for smack), people would bitch for awhile, but then they'd adjust. The market would go out and create hybrid cars at affordable prices. Why? because there would be a large market for people who couldn't afford gas at the price set. They would take public transportation, or buy something with super-mondo gas efficiency. Right now the only demand for those electric scooter cars are "socially-aware", anal retentive hippie actors.

Of course the huge gas guzzling cars, the suburbans and the sports cars, would be a luxtury item, only available to those with the dough to get their gasoline fix. Those who could afford it would buy it, while those who could not, would buy something in their price range, that still fit their needs.

Hurray for capitalism.

Of course, its much much easier to threaten "price gougers" with jail time. The authorities threatened gas gougers (Read: Market capitalists) before they threatened looters! Sure, rape a teen girl, and run off with 5 plasma tvs, but if you charge above 4 bucks for gas, we are bringing the hammer down so help us!

For the record, I drive a 12 year old Camry, which gets pretty decent gas mileage. It cost me about 40 bucks for half a tank last week during the supply scare.

George, what are we going to do with you?

I opened this blogging window with the plan to blast Bush for his nomination of Roberts as Chief Justice. The guy isn't even a Regular Justice yet, and has no time on the greatest court in the land, and you nominate him from the lead position? C'mon. I mean , I can understand not putting a Democratic nominate in as chief justice, certainly not Ginsburg.

And than I said to myself... can you imagine if he nominated Scalia to Chief Justice. Or even Thomas? The outcry would be vicious. So I guess Roberts was his only choice, other than nominating a justice whose postion he doesn't necessarily agree with. (which is asking alot of any politician.)

So I guess Roberts' as nominee isn't as stupid as it looks at first glance.
