Atlanta Prefers Dead Cops to Law and Order

I apologize that I have been absent lately. The end of the December and the beginning of January has been a difficult one for myself and my family. You see my brother Ray has been indicted for murder.

Let me explain, as best as I'm able. The sheer lunacy of the Fulton County District Attorney makes it difficult but I will do my best.

Three years ago, My brother, Raymond Bunn, and his partner, Terry Mulkey were part of the Atlanta Police Department's Zone 2 "Crime Reduction Unit." The purpose was to target particularly prolific crimes in the zone. in Zone 2, which includes the party area of Atlanta known as Buckhead, that crime is primarily vehicluar break-ins. While not undercover, the unit did often wear "plain clothes." On the night in question my brother was wearing blue pants, a black t-shirt featuring the word "POLICE" in bright yellow letters*, as well as his badge hanging around his neck. He was also wearing a standard issue utility belt/holster.

So one night, towards the end of their shift, Mulkey and my brother hear glass shattering, and spot a suspect by a parked car. They pull into the parking lot, with lights and sirens flashing... The suspect, flees to a Yukon Sports Utility Vehicle**. Ray and his partner get out, and move towards the vehicle, which accelerates towards them. He and his partner pull their weapons, (all the while identifying themselves as police officers) , and the vehicle stops.

My brother and his partner moved towards the vehicle with Ray moving towards the driver side, and his partner moving towards the passenger side, when the vehicle suddenly accelerated again, striking my brother at the knee. He fell towards the driver side of the vehicle, at which time he fired two rounds from his weapon at the driver of the vehicle. His report clearly states that he feared both that he would be pulled underneath the vehicle if he did nothing, and that his partner was also about to be hit.

For the record there was nothing preventing the SUV from turning left or right, or reversing in order to flee the scene. Heading directly at the officers was a choice.

The man who made that choice was the driver of the vehicle; Corey Ward, a young black man. The MSM has portrayed Ward as a young man, with good grades, looking forward to college, out on the town with his friends in his family's SUV. They have ignored the drugs and stolen property found in the vehicle (there are pictures of it), of his "friends" prior convictions for vehicular break ins. They have even completely falsified the reason for the stop, with the Atlanta Journal Constitution repeatedly referring to the reason for the stop as being a stolen vehicle. They have essential portrayed my brother for shooting Ward for "Driving while Black." No report filed by any of the police refers to anything about a stolen vehicle. The crime was a vehicular break in, WHICH WAS ACTIVELY OBSERVED BY POLICE.

The Circus came to town as Rev. Markel Hutchins, a "Civil Rights" protestor led marchs, and preyed on the Ward family's reasonable grief, and like hyenas smelling a fresh kill, The law firm of the late Johnnie Cochran filed a law suit on behalf of the deceased young man.

And now Fulton District Attorney Paul Howard has entered the fray. he sought, and got, indictments against Ray for Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault and Violation of the Oath of Office. My brother spent almost a week in jail awaiting bond, during which time his youngest son was born, and two Atlanta Police Officers were hit by a suspect fleeing in a vehicle who then attempted to back over one of them. The officers have said they didn't fire their weapons for fear of ending up like Ray, in jail for doing their jobs.

District Attorney Paul Howard dropped charges against the suspects, and.. even more sickening, granted them immunity in exchange for their testimony against the officer who tried to arrest them. We can not understand exactly why this is happening. the Georgia Bureau of Investigation declared the shoot a good one, and even Detective Carter, the Homicide investigator who testified at the grand jury for the District Attorney said he would call the shoot a good one. the DA called for a intermission, Carter took a payphone call at the courthouse, and moments later came back to reverse himself. If that doesn't make it clear that pressure is coming down to scapegoat my brother, than perhaps the fact that Carter was offered a job at the DA's office shortly after the investigation, which he bandied into a position with the FBI helps clear the matter.

I don't honestly believe that I have many readers. But I am begging for the help of those I do have. If you have any doubts about what I have said, his lawyers can confirm their authenticity for you. I have a contact number if you want it. For those of you who would like to contribute financially, a Legal Defense Fund has been set up at Wachovia. It is account # 2000027676758 under the name the Raymond Bunn Defense Fund.

Even if you aren't from Atlanta or even in Georgia, we need your help. It's the police that walk the line every night, often in areas that resemble Fallujah more than anything else. Can you sit back and watch as a rogue DA sides with the criminals over your protectors, till the police are too terrified of the consquences to do their jobs?

This is not a racial issue, whether Corey Ward was a good boy who made a single mistake, or a career criminal was irrelevant. Whether Ward was white, black or any other ethnicity made no difference. My brother shot a suspect wielding a two ton weapon which had already struck him, and possibly was striking his partner. The understandable grief of Ward's family is being exploited by political opportunists and an irresponsible MSM.

Please help.

NOTE:

* The Words on Ray's clothing were Silver Not Yellow. I apologize for the error.
** The SUV was a Tahoe, not a Yukon. Again, my mistake.

David,

I have been keeping you, your brother and your family in my prayers.

I have had my run ins with the good reverend and I believe he is as you put it. Hopefully, the jury will be truely one of your brother's peers and he will be found not guilty.

If there is anything I can do, please let me know.

Adam

First of all it bothers me to no end that you would publish an article without clear and factual information. This is Carter the Detective who investigated the case. For the record its a terrible tragedy what is happening to your brother, but its no one fault, but those in the hiearchy who chose to let the DA's office call the shots during the investigation, as well as the officers supervisors that night. As for your unintelligent comment about me parlaying a job offer from the DA's office into the FBI, that is grossly untrue and I think you need to get your facts together first. I have NEVER!!! been offered a job at the DA's office and wouldn't have excepted one if they offerred one. I initially told the grand jury that the shooting could have been a good one, but didn't tell them it could have been a bad one. The Homicide Unit never gave a ruling on whether it was good or bad and neither did I, and that was the problem the DA's office had. I was almost home when one of the Asst. DA's called me on my cell phone and asked me to come back, and I did. When I got back down there I told them that my earlier conversation with one of the Asst. DA's was that I was unsure because it was just that close, so actually what I said was in benefit to your brother. When back in the GJroom I told them that it could have been a bad shooting to because of the inconsistent statements by the two officers and it was just that close. Thats what was said then and during the early parts of the investigation. Everyone from the Majors to LT's, to SGT's and other Homicide Det's knew it could go either way. If you need anything else cleared up or clarified call me and not someone else. So, no there was no call from a payphone or anything that the DA's office did to get me anything from the FBI. There is plenty of blame to go around, but absolutely none warranted towards anyone in the Homicide Office.

While I cannot verify the authenticity of Anoynmous, I have allowed the comment to be published.

In rebuttal, the pay phone story is directly from my brother and his lawyer Don English who say they observed it. The DA' job story comes from the IBPO President, from what information he reached that conclusion I do not know.

addendum: I am told that there is a Carter in the DA's investigations office. Whether its the same Carter apparently is not entirely clear. If its not than I was misinformed, and would owe the man an apology. I have no problem saying that, because as i've said before we're better served by the truth in this issue.

I wish people were as concerned about the Atlanta Journal Constitution's errors in the case.

Well, I usually have faith in the courts but this boggles my mind... I guess I'll just end up on the Officer Down Memorial Page and become a statistic! I'd rather be carried by 6 than tried by 12.

David,

With a future career in law soon I'm still one of those dreamers who believe's that justice is usually served. Obviously there have been some high profile cases that may seem contrary to that, and hopefully you're brothers won't be such a case. I'm with Adam in that I hope the jury will know the truth. There's a Wachovia in Statesboro, and I'll try to put some money in there, as I realize that as sad as it is, that is the best way to guarantee a solid defense.

On another note, am I the only one who finds it strange that the anonymous person used words like hierarchy and parlay, then used the word except instead of accept...
