Afghan Christian Faces Death for Conversion and what it means
AP Coverage
So it looks like the Afghan government is seeking a way out of this, without tearing itself apart. Good for them.
But not good enough. This "Human Rights Commission" needs to be abolished immediately.
The failure of the State Department to aggressively condemn this whole thing is disgusting. I am crossing my fingers that private actions were taken. That's always possible, but I'm not hopeful. We were already pissed off at State because they can't figure out what exactly what America's policy is. No suprise. They are institutionally incompetent, filled with "realists" who think countries can be treated like trading cards or game pieces, instead of as being filled with people, who have ideas, beliefs, and who deserve to be free.
Clearly we face problems like this, because of our desire to form up governments so we can get the hell out of the line of fire. Fair enough. We forget after WWII that it took us a long time to "De-nazify" the country. We aren't making the same effort in Afghanistan and Iraq. So the islamists simply worm their way back into the new government.
We have two choices. We can either choose to believe that islamist extremism is a political idealogy, which we must combat, in the forum of ideas, and on the battlefield, as we did with both Nazism and Communism. That means we can't simply leave and say, "okay now form a government, any kind will do."
Otherwise we must be of the opinion that some how muslims are inherently incapable of desiring freedom and the Enlightment ideals. To do so would mean our destruction. Either we would be forced to conduct a war of civilizations, meaning the use of overwhelming force and extermination, (thus costing us our ideals and destroying our way of life), or we must surrender, which would mean our physical and ideological defeat.
