This is the area where I impart my wisdom about politics, international relations, and the state of the world in general. No, I am not deluded enough to imagine this matters much to anyone.

Rangeling up a larger military

Well, Charlie Rangel is at it again. Aren't we so glad that this guy gets to be in the majority now? Trying to reinstall the draft.

It's not that I'm even necessarily against the idea of conscripted service. What I am against is Rangel introducing the draft. Rangel isn't introducing the draft into the discussion because he thinks it will help the war effort. He's doing it because the vast majority of Americans hate the idea of a draft, and he thinks if he can get one, it will kill not only support for this war, but support for any war. If Charlie Rangel gets his way, the only thing we'll have to draft is the one guy responsible for raising the white flag.

You are seriously telling me, that everyone else in Harlem was soo busy, and had better things to do, that they couldn't find someone else to replace this clown?

David...Joseph heard this story on the ABC Radio news yesterday morning when I was driving him to school...he asked what was a draft?

So I told him about the Selective Service and when he was 18 he would need to register and if there ever was a draft he could end up in the army or another branch of the military. He then wanted to know if that meant he might go into a war. I told him that if he was drafted, he might indeed end up in a war. That really scared him.

On another note on your post...a lot of districts had no real challenger. I am always amazed at the very few choices we get when elections roll around. You would think we could have more choices than we do. It's a shame that either not enough people feel they can do the job or not enough people are willing to run.

Why would they? If they run for office they are going to be utterly eviscerated, lied about, and tormented about any indiscretion or misspoken word. Someone said in a democracy the people get the leadership they deserve, and I think that's true. We get unsatisfactory, limp-wristed, weaselly corrupt little douchebags, because anyone competent, honest, and ambitious isn't stupid enough to get involved in the mess we've turned politics into. Which is why on the county/municipal level you see old fellers who are there for just the government health benefits. You just hope to have a few good ones, its the best you can hope for. I mean, name for me anyone except the few famous members of the continental congress? You can't, because probably the majority of them were simply local politicos, landowners or lawyers. But with few willful men who showed leadership we did okay. Its the nature of republican forms of government.

I remember when I had to sign up for the selective service. It had a very profound impact on me at the time to realize that you filled out this little card and sent it in, and if you didn't Federal agents could come to your house and drag you off. Having read more history, I think of it now as more of a privilege. In the olden days, like in Rome's Republic, only the citizens could serve in the military, it was both an honor, and a duty. My objection to conscription is that the military leadership doesn't want it, which to me seems kind of important. If the situation were ever so dire that they activate the selective service draft, than the situation is so dire that the survival of the country itself is at stake, and anyone who would draft dodge would be a traitor in my eyes.
